The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Tone catchment area and warned floods are expected to affect roads around Hillfarrance, Bradford on Tone and Creech St Michael.

In guidance last updated on Thursday morning the agency said flooding of roads and farmland would be possible between noon on March 9 and 6pm on March 10.

The Environment Agency advised the public to avoid using low lying footpaths near watercourses, and to remain aware in the event further warnings are issued.

The warning comes as river measuring stations have detected a swelling of the River Tone following heavy snow which largely melted on Wednesday.

In the event of a flood alert the Environment Agency advises members of the public to 'prepare a bag ready with vital items like insurance documents and medications, check you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies and plan how you'll move family and pets to safety.'

The Met Office forecast for the area predicts a high chance of rain until Tuesday when rainclouds are set to give way to sunny spells with temperatures rising next week to a high of 12 degrees celsius.
