A FLOOD alert has been issued across the Wellington area.
The environment agency warned of possible flooding after days of heavy rain associated with Storm Henk battered parts of Somerset.
In guidance last updated on Monday, January 1, the Environment Agency forecast river levels to rise on the River Tone, bringing the threat of it bursting its banks.
The area has already seen some localised flooding after parts of Nynehead were rendered completely impassable, resulting in a motorist becoming trapped - and then rescued - on New Year's Day.
The Tone has been seen in spate in Bradford on Tone, raising fears of flooding in the small village. In a statement a spokesperson for the Environment Agency said:
"Flooding could occur on the roads around Hillfarrance and Bradford-on-Tone, the Lane End Road at Ham and the Creech St Michael to Henlade road. Bradford-on-Tone ringbanks will be bankfull. No property flooding is expected.
"Further rainfall is forecast for Tuesday, January 2 and the weather will remain unsettled this week. We will continue to monitor local water levels and the weather conditions and are checking rivers and weed screens for blockages in the area.
"Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk, cycle or drive through flood water."
The Met Office has forecasted that rain will continue to fall through Tuesday and Wednesday, before the weather dries up toward the end of the week.
