A van became stranded in deep water on the A38 near Wellington early today.

Firefighters from the Wellington Station were quickly on the scene at Ham, near the Blackdown Garden Centre, and one using water rescue equipment helped the driver to safety.

Crew members managed the traffic around the obstacle and flood water until a highways team arrived to take over. The van and floodwater have continued to cause delays on the road through the morning.

A spokesperson for Wellington Fire Station said: "An early call to Piccadilly corner near Ham this morning where there was deep water in the road.

"One firefighter donned water rescue equipment to aid the driver. Crews managed traffic until daylight and highways to take over."
