AWARD-winning Rumwell Farm Shop, near Wellington, is hosting a curry night next week (May 25) featuring cuisine inspired from a culture thousands of miles away while championing produce from closer to home.

The event, which opens at 6.30 pm, will include a madras made from its hand-reared Angus cattle and dishes using potatoes grown on the family farm just along the road.

Farm shop partner Anne Mitchell said: “It is very important that we use as many locally and regionally sourced ingredients as possible in our dishes and that produce grown and reared on our own farm, just four miles from the shop, are included wherever possible, too.

“Whether that is our own meat, eggs, apples, or potatoes.

“Sustainability, provenance, and keeping food miles down are very much part of our ethos and what we do here.

“We also focus on making real food, from real ingredients, onsite.

“So, in the spirit of celebrating our home-reared and grown produce, and other items sourced from as nearby as possible, spices excluded, we are inviting everybody to come along and enjoy a traditional Indian meal made by our wonderful chefs.

“It takes place in the modern and comfortable surroundings of our new Rumwell Orchard extension with delightful views of our apple orchard.

“Each table will be provided with a selection of curries to choose from, including beef madras, featuring our Rumwell Angus beef hand-reared on our farm in Hillcommon, chicken korma, and vegetable biriyani.

“Plus, a variety of side dishes such as aromatic pilau rice, poppadoms, assorted naans, onion bhajis, and Bombay potatoes, all made by our skilled chefs here on site.

“The main course is followed by a selection of delicious homemade desserts, which can be ordered separately on the night.

“Our normal café menu will be available for desserts.”

Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run business owned by the Mitchell family.

It was originally a potato store when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free-range eggs at the gate more than 25 years ago.

Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased, and the farm shop grew into the place it is today.

David and Anne’s sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business, as well as their wives, Sophie and Donna.

The farm shop won nine Taste of the West Gold Awards in 2022 for its shop and café and also for some of its made on site products.

It was also a finalist in the Large Farm Shop of the Year category in the 2023 national Farm Retail Awards.
