THE ancient folk custom of 'Blaize 'n' Bridget Night' is set to return to Wellington’s Cottage Inn on Saturday, February 8.
Gathering at 7.30pm, attendees will be introduced to the new Bishop Blaize, the Patron saint of wool-combers, and St Bridget, patron saint of weavers, healing, poetry, smith craft and the eternal flame, as they are formally sworn in.
There will be a ceremony, demonstrations, recitals, and songs in veneration for Blaize and Bridget, followed by celebrations with the Bootstrap Border Morris Team. The night will then continue with Wellington’s folk music collective for further song and dance.
Members of the Wellington Folk and Custom society, including The Oath Swearer, Mordred the Dragon, Lord Misrule and Mr Double Danger the 2nd, will also be present for the evening’s events.
According to an account from 1889 by the writer Ealing Deane, the festival of Bishop Blaize was regularly celebrated in the town of Wellington every February prior to 1850. Now, the Wellington Folk and Custom Society honour the event in the town on an annual basis.
