FORMER Liberal Democrats leader Sir Vince Cable visited the Taunton and Wellington constituency at the weekend to endorse the Parliamentary campaign of Gideon Amos.

Mr Amos is standing for the party in Thursday’s General Election to become the first MP for the redrawn constituency.

Sir Vince, who was Business Secretary from 2010 until 2015, spent an evening canvassing in Wellington before meeting party supporters in Taunton the following morning ahead of more doorstepping.

He told Mr Amos: “You have a fantastic team here with real enthusiasm.

“I get a sense from the polling that you are almost there but it is going to be close.

“We need to keep pushing to the very last minute, but there is a really good chance here.

“You have got a really good campaign here, and I look forward to seeing you in Parliament.”

Mr Amos said: “I am delighted to have the support of somebody of Sir Vince’s calibre to win Taunton and Wellington from the Conservatives in this General Election.

“Without his work as a Minister, the UK would not be the biggest offshore wind energy generating country in the world.

“His record of sound economic management and leadership, such as creating two million apprenticeships and setting up the Green Investment Bank, are a model for the kind of responsible Government we desperately need to see in the UK once again.”
