A GROUP which runs a community farm on green space in Wellington has received a £300 donation to help engage more people with the project.
Wellington Community Food was launched in August 2022, with the help of a grant from the Somerset Community Foundation.
An area within a green corridor, near The Basins, is used to grow a variety of vegetables with the first phase of cultivation taking place in the spring of 2023.
After a successful first year, with more than two tonnes of vegetables harvested, the aim is now to get more people and schools in the town informed and involved in the scheme - which has been boosted by the Wellington Repair Cafe.
Becky Lockyear, Wellington Community Food board member, said: “We very much appreciate the generous donation from Wellington Repair Café to be spent on vital field equipment for our educational visits.
“All local schools have been invited to visit the farm, to explore and understand more about farming and local wildlife.”
Holly Regan-Jones, of the repair café steering group, said: “We are in the fortunate position of having been able to minimise the repair café’s running costs, while being continually grateful for the unfailing generosity of the people who make use of its services.
“Our bank balance has grown, and as the repair café is a not-for-profit community activity, it seems only right that we should share the benefits with another group having an aim in common, of creating a more environmentally sustainable community.”
