PEOPLE across Somerset are being encouraged this summer to take part in the One Million Step Challenge, a fundraiser for beating Diabetes in the UK.

The challenge runs from July 1 to September 30, and participants aim to walk one million steps over three months, which averages about 10,000 steps per day. You can walk anywhere, from your local park to your living room, and can do it alone or with friends, family, or colleagues.

Signing up for the challenge is free, and it's a great way to improve your fitness and mood while raising essential funds for Diabetes UK. The money raised will support life-saving research and help provide care and support for those living with diabetes.

Phaedra Perry, Head of Diabetes UK for the south-west and south central regions, said: "Walking is a great way to get fit. By taking on the One Million Step Challenge, you're not only working towards a healthier you but also helping us fund new treatments, campaign for better care, and offer support through our helpline.”

The half a million step challenge is about 5,400 steps a day, and is a good start for beginners.

For experienced walkers, there's the 1.7 million step challenge, which is about 18,400 steps a day, equivalent to walking from Land's End to John O’Groats.

Participants can earn rewards such as an eco-friendly wooden medal, a special One Million Step Challenge t-shirt, and a Diabetes UK hoodie.
