ELDERLY people in danger of losing their winter fuel allowance are urged to check if they are eligible for Pension Credit ahead of this weekend’s deadline (Saturday, December 21).

MP Gideon Amos (Lib Dem, Taunton and Wellington) has stepped up his campaign to support those set to lose the payment by visiting residents and distributing information on how to claim over recent weeks.

Mr Amos wants to ensure as many people as possible get registered for Pension Credit, so they continue to receive their Winter Fuel Payment.

He said the government’s own estimates showed that 880,000 pensioners, who are poor enough to get Pension Credit, are not registered.

Mr Amos said: “In areas like Taunton and Wellington, which have higher than average older populations, that could be around 2,000 people here who will lose help they desperately need.

“To claim, just phone this number 0800 99 1234 and staff at the Department of Work and Pensions will make your application for you.

“If that doesn’t work, ring me on 01823 336666 or contact me at gideonamos.org.uk/contact and I will make sure you are able to apply.

“It’s really important to note that - even if you’re only awarded 50p of Pension Credit - that will ensure you receive the Winter Fuel Payment.

“Don’t forget to do it before this Saturday and claim for the maximum three months backdated.”

Mr Amos has slammed the Labour Government move to halt the Winter Fuel Payment for millions of pensioners up and down the country.

He added: "We all understand that the wealthiest can manage without this payment - my own mum used to give hers to charity.

“But some of the country’s poorest and most vulnerable older people are being caught up in this and will lose vital funds to help them keep the heating on in the next few months.”

People who born before September 23, 1958, could get either £200 or £300 towards heating bills. They must also be in receipt of one of the following: Pension Credit; Universal Credit; income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA); income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA); Income Support; Child Tax Credit, or Working Tax Credit.
