MILVERTON’S hugely successful street fair may not be able to keep going as an annual event unless more villagers step forward to help.
The Milverton Trust holds the fair on the first Bank Holiday in May and distributes the proceeds as grants to local organisations, with a record £5,964 raised this year.
It has already started to look at holding next year’s fair in the autumn instead of spring.
A spokesperson said: “The street fair takes a huge amount of work for the committee so we will be looking at asking more villagers to contribute in small ways to keep the street fair alive, for example, could you run the raffle or man the raffle stall next year.
“Without extra help we might look at reducing the frequency of the event.”
The spokesperson said treasurer John Townend,‘a stoic and dependable member of the team for many years’, had stepped down because he was also a parish councillor, which was ‘a benefit to the whole village’.
Fiona Williams was the new treasurer, while new trustees were Mark Williams, Sue Murray, and Ben Orton.
A Houndsmoor Farm Barn Dance held in association with Milverton School Association and Arthur and Christine Whittle raised nearly £1,500 which will be split equally between the trust and school.
A form for local organisations to make grant applications was on the village website or hard copies were available from any trust member.
