MAJOR roadworks which are currently underway in Wellington will be paused on Thursday (August 24) to allow pupils to receive their GCSE results.

Contractors will keep a route open along Mantle Street all morning to allow vehicles to enter Court Fields School from the town approach.

Access from the Rockwell Green direction will not be permitted as work continues to resurface the road between Wellington Medical Centre and Rockwell Green Post Office.

The Court Fields School access for staff, pupils, and parents will be one-way, with all vehicles having to leave the site via Courtland Road.

Somerset assistant highway service manager Gwyn Hughes said the resurfacing work was progressing well and there had not been any real issues, other than a parked car at the Rockwell Green end which caused a slight delay.

All planing had been completed and on Tuesday (August 22) the contractors laid more than 100 tonnes of final top surface and a binder coat was being laid from the Rockwell Green end.

The plan was for contractors to continue laying final top surface past Court Fields School on Wednesday (August 23) and re-lining and setting the iron work to start near Wellington Medical Centre, finishing by the end of the day to allow access to the school on Thursday morning.

Mantle Street and Hilly Head has been completely closed to traffic during the daytime while the project has been carried out.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of Thursday.

Contractors from Milestone Infrastructure are then due to return for second round of major works on Monday, September 11, when drainage will be replaced in Exeter Road between Dobree Park and Popes Lane crossroads.

The drainage work is estimated to last for 20 days until Friday, October 6, with the road completely shut while it is carried out.

During the closure, Popes Lane from the junction with Andrew Allan Road will become one-way between 8 am and 5 pm daily, with vehicles during those times only being able to travel out of town toward Wellington Relief Road.

The work will be paused to allow Exeter Road to be opened for a day for Wellington Carnival to take place on Saturday, September 30.
