WELLINGTON Bowling Club’s hopes of another successful season, along with other local sports clubs, seem to have disappeared.
All outdoor and most indoor clubs have on the advice of Bowls England ceased all activity.
A spokesman for the Wellington club said: “We had been anticipating another really good summer. Several of our league teams gained promotion in 2019 and we were looking forward to consolidating our position in those higher divisions.
“Similarly, we were to have hosted two county competitions, two or three touring sides and had over 75 friendly games arranged.
“We recently spent upwards of £50,000 in the close season extending and refurbishing our toilet and changing room facilities but have had to postpone the official opening ceremony. In addition, work on phase 2 involving major improvements to the bar and clubroom area have now been put on hold.
“However, we have managed to donate some items from our catering section to a local nursing home to help in the current situation.
“Finally, I know the executive committee would like to thank all members who have paid a much reduced retainer fee which will help to meet much of this season’s fixed costs which cannot be avoided.
“We look forward to being able to resume some activity when it is safe to do so and would direct members to the club’s website, www.wellingtonbowling.club, for further details as they become available.”
