WELLINGTON centenarian Madge Covey is being honoured this week by the Royal British Legion (RBL) for her long service to the charity.

Madge, who is now aged 101 years, has been selling RBL poppies to raise funds to support veterans for the past 90 years.

Now, the legion is to present her with ‘centenarian membership’, meaning her member fees will be waived.

A special presentation ceremony for the purpose will be held in Wellington Conservative Club on Wednesday afternoon.

Madge, who has lived in Wellington since moving from Southampton in 1992, first took part in the annual Poppy Appeal when she was aged just 11 years, and she was a standard bearer for the legion from 1974 to 2010.

She was awarded a BEM in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for her services to the community but the presentation was delayed by a year because of the Covid pandemic.
