THE family of the late David Powell, of Springfield Road, Wellington, have paid tribute to ‘a loving, generous, kind, and endlessly funny person’.
David, who died at his home on Tuesday, June 27, at the age of 56, was born in Bournemouth, Poole, on December 23, 1966. He moved to Honiton in 1967 and then to Springfield Road, Wellington, with his father David who still lives in Wellington, in February, 1971.
He remained in Wellington living in a few different properties before meeting his wife Catriona in 1986 and marrying in 1990.
David and Catriona bought back his childhood home in Springfield Road in 1994 which remains the family home to this day.
This is where David and Catriona had their family of four sons - Robert (25), James (23), William (22) and Harry (17). David regularly enjoyed watching his sons represent Wellington Football club from youth level onwards. David’s love of pool also rubbed off with his sons with three of his four playing in the WDPL.
Robert has been playing since 2014 and has now stepped up to captain the Jets.
David was always extremely hardworking and had many different jobs including working at a Rose Nursery, Gra-Mar Roofing, CICA before breaking briefly into self-employment with his own fruit and veg round.
David moved on to Rentokil and other things before opening his business, “Powell’s Workwear”. Originally he set up in Longforth garage in 2006, later moving to Fore Street.
In 2018, David closed his shop in Fore Street, deciding to continue his business online. David moved into buying and selling, all things from antique furniture and tools..
Hobbies: David was an avid sports fan, especially football and cricket. His love for Leeds United is well-known throughout the town. This passion for Leeds United lives on through his family who all support Leeds.
Thanks to a fundraiser set up by friends of the family and many generous donations from people who knew him, David and his family were able to go up to Elland Road on 22nd January to watch Leeds United live for the first time as a whole family fulfilling a family wish.
The family remain eternally grateful to all who donated.
David loved his pub sports too and was a regular in both the Wellington District Pool League and Wellington Skittles League for many years.
David played Skittles for the Rebels for 20-plus years. He played for The Haywain throughout the ’80s, returning to the pool league in 2014 with The Jets.
The family added: “We would like dad to be remembered for the loving, generous, kind, and endlessly funny person he was. David’s funeral service will take place at Taunton Crematorium on July 19 at 10am. Anyone who would like to attend is welcome.”
