TALKS aimed at re-opening Wellington’s main post office following its closure ten months ago may start up again in a few weeks.
The post office in High Street shut last August, along with the One Stop convenience store in which it was based, but it was said the closure would only be ‘temporary’ and an interested party was intending to open it again.
However, it was thought it would take at least six months for the new premises to be ready for business, making any re-opening unlikely until early in the New Year.
Nothing came of it and since last August customers have had to get to alternative post offices at Rockwell Green, Oake and Taunton.
Now county and town councillor John Thorne, who was involved in a campaign to re-open the facility, believes talks should be revived after being put to one side because of Covid-19.
“Obviously everything has been put on hold because of the pandemic – and quite rightly so,” he said. “I have not heard anything for a while.
“It is time we should be looking at it again, and asking questions and finding out what is going on.
“The town council has not met for a while but will be holding a virtual meeting in the first Monday of next month. It would be good if the council could discuss it again.”
When the post office closed last year, Mr Thorne said: “The Post Office is a Government-owned business and therefore there should be an obligation for it to step in and directly run the service until a replacement can be found.”
Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow was also asked to take up the challenge.
The closing of Wellington’s post office came as a big shock to the town but most customers felt it would not be long – or difficult – to open in different premises.
But one of the stumbling blocks has been that the sums do not add up and there is little money in it for whoever would run it.
