A BROTHER and sister from Wellington are planning a skydive to raise money for Bristol Hospital’s the Grand Appeal Charity.
Hannah Power, who was born in 2006 and diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of four, will be taking part in the jump alongside her brother, Max.
In 2006 hospitals were not routinely using heel prick tests to detect cystic fibrosis in newborn babies and, unfortunately, Hannah’s condition was undetected for four years.
The rules on heel prick testing for newborn babies changed in just seven months after Hannah's birth, in January 2007. Hannah and Max, 16, will be doing the skydive at Dunkeswell, Devon.
Hannah received care from both Bristol Children’s Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital, in Taunton, after her diagnosis.
The Grand Appeal charity support children in hospital and their families.
Hannah said: “I attended Bristol Children’s hospital regularly; this is where I learnt about the Grand Appeal, and I am now transitioning to adult care.”
“I would like to raise money to say thank you to Bristol Children’s Hospital and to support other children and families in hospital. I am doing this skydive on my 18th birthday along with my younger brother Max.”
Her brother, Max, said: “I am turning 16 this year and I would like to raise money for The Grand Appeal to support children and families in hospital and to say thank you for the amazing care Bristol Children’s hospital has provided for my sister.
“I am skydiving with my sister to support her and show her that she can achieve a lot in her life despite her conditions.”
The duo have not done anything like this together before and are looking forward to Hannah's 18th birthday, which is when they’re planning to make the jump.
They are keen to put smiles on the faces of other children who are facing difficult medical treatment for cystic fibrosis.
They also want to say thank you to the NHS and supporting charities.
