A silver bugle, gifted to the town by The Rifles, is now on display in Wellington.
The Rifles were awarded the Freedom of Wellington on Saturday, June 17, when they were awarded a freedom scroll and the right to parade through the town.
The regiment in turn gifted the town with a silver bugle, the symbol of The Rifles. That gift is now on show for residents to see at Wellington's museum on Fore Street. Inscribed upon the bugle are the words:
"Presented to the Town of Wellington by The Rifles to mark the granting of the Freedom of Wellington to The Rifles 17th June 2023
Historically riflemen used bugles, rather than drums, to communicate on the battlefield. It survived as a symbol and lives on as the regiment's identifier.
Wellington Town Council has encouraged people to visit the museum to see the bugle, which will stand as an artefact of the historic day.
