A SMALL small group of young scientists from Years 7 to 9 had the privilege of attending the Somerset Sustainable Futures launch event, showcasing the school’s commitment to supporting females in STEM (November 26).

Joining other schools at this event, the students explored exhibition stalls featuring local businesses and services, gaining insight into innovative solutions for a sustainable future.

The experience was both educational and motivational, and the students were thrilled to receive goody bags, adding a fun touch to an inspiring day. This event was an opportunity to empower young women in science and to nurture their passion for creating a sustainable future.

Following this, on November 28, some of Court Fields’ Year 9 students had the incredible opportunity to visit Hinkley Point C, one of the largest construction projects in Europe and a vital part of the UK’s energy future. The trip was both educational and inspiring, as students participated in an engaging workshop that explored the science and engineering behind nuclear energy.

At the visitor centre, the students delved into interactive exhibits that explained the process of electricity generation and the importance of sustainable energy sources. The highlight of the day was a guided coach tour around the site, where students saw the massive scale of construction and the cutting-edge technology being used to build this state-of-the-art power station.

The trip not only enriched their understanding of electricity, a topic they’ve been studying in class, but also sparked curiosity about careers in science and engineering.
